I’ve never been more grateful to be a book lover than I have this year. In a time filled with unexpected challenges and crisis, books give us the perfect escape. Today, I’m excited to feature An Oddity of Some Consequence by Gary Dickson, a novel featuring a timeline so unlike our own that makes it the ideal distraction.
This historical fiction book is filled with secrecy, romance and a touch of fantasy. After reading The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue, I’m eager to discover more books that feature time travel and unexplained circumstances.

An Oddity of Some Consequence Synopsis
He has always lived in mystery; will she be the one to discover his secret?
Robert Valmer moves from Rome to Beverly Hills in 2015, where against his better judgment, he falls for Alexis Roth, PhD, psychologist to the stars. But Alexis wants to know everything. Start from the beginning, she says. The beginning? Can he really tell her about how he fled France during the French Revolution in 1789 or about Italy during World War II? If he tells her even a little, will she think of him as a liar or a freak rather than a lover?
He tries to deflect her probes, pleading shyness, but she knows that reticence is often the veil behind which secrecy lurks. His practice of stonewalling only further ignites her burning curiosity.
As the pressure for honesty mounts, he does what he’s always done—flee. But Alexis is not a lover to be easily dismissed. She follows him to Europe, determined to track him down for an explanation. Where can she start when her quarry doesn’t want to be found? Each clue she uncovers leads her deeper into intrigue.
An Oddity of Some Consequence is a glamorous tale of mystery, romance, and the fountain of youth.
What excites me about An Oddity of Some Consequence
Growing up, I loved fantasy novels that had a little bit of romance sprinkled in. As I got older, though, I turned away from the fantasy genre and headed more toward contemporary books.
Ultimately, I found I couldn’t connect with the fantastical worlds that I once loved. Now, I’m starting to discover that there are books out there that combine the best of what I love. An Oddity of Some Consequence does exactly that by incorporating the mystery and intrigue elements of a contemporary novel, but twists the genre with magical aspects like immortality.
Eternal life is a concept that often polarizes readers. In An Oddity of Some Consequence, Gary Dickson explores both the positives and negatives of immortality, and lets the readers decide whether it’s a curse or a gift.
There’s also the romance aspect of An Oddity of Some Consequence, which is the heart of the story. How far would you go to discover a loved one’s secret?
